What is Lithium Battery?
A lithium-ion battery cell is a type of rechargeable battery that uses lithium ions as the main component in the electrochemical reaction that generates electricity. Lithium-ion cells are commonly used in portable electronics, electric vehicles, and energy storage systems due to their high energy density, long cycle life, and low self-discharge rate.
Lithium Battery Cell Shapes
There are three types of battery cells: prismatic, cylindrical, and pouch cells. There is a difference in dimensions and manufacturing processes in the electrode-separator-compound’s inner structure.
Lithium Battery Pouch Cells
As a cell container, pouch cells use a flexible foil instead of a rigid outside can. A pouch cell has stacked electrodes and separators. To account for possible swelling, pouch cells should be designed with enough space. Those modules with pouch cells have single-row cells with arresters either on the same side or on the opposite side of the row. There are two types of pouch cell connections: adhesive bond welding and tab-to-tab or tab-to-busbar bridges. A form-fit connection using screws and busbars can also be used as a bridge without supporting plates.
As a primary fixation method for pouch cells, cell frames are often used. This case involves inserting the cells, sealing them redundantly, and tensioning them flexibly. A cooling system could also be installed in the spaces between the cells. Pouches cells may even be glued if desired.
Lithium Battery Cylindrical Cells
In cylindrical cells, battery anodes, cathodes, and separators are sandwiched, rolled up, and packed into cylindrical containers. Mass-produced cells of this type were among the first to reach the market and remain popular today. The arrester is on the opposite side of each row of cells. In addition to adhesive connections, they may also be wire bonded to busbars. Support plates are not required in this case. A cylindrical cell must be fixed into a battery module or pack with rigid spacers, spacer strips, or mounting brackets. Cylindrical cells can also be fixed with glue. The battery pack is heavier and more complex because of these fixings.
Lithium Battery Prismatic Cells
There are three basic components of prismatic cells: anodes, cathodes, and separators that are sandwiched, rolled up, and pressed into a metallic or hard-plastic housing. Stacking electrodes can also be used to assemble electrodes. The arresters are always on the same side regardless of whether the lithium prismatic cells have one row or two rows of modules.
They can be adhesively bonded by welding, with support plates and busbars, or traction / form-fit connected with screwing or latching, with hole-busbars at the bridges. Finally, prismatic cells can be glued together. To avoid air pockets, a light and elastic joining medium is required.
